When Karen and Michael Johnston bought Wold House 14 years ago they had every intention of turning it into a wedding and events venue.

The plan went awry after they fell in love with the spectacular period property and decided to make it their family home. Since then the couple, who own the popular North Star Hotel and Restaurant in Flamborough, have carried out an extensive renovation.

It was commissioned by John Dickinson as a gift for his future bride and, in a bid to impress her, he spared no expense on the fit-out. He even installed a replica of the cantilevered staircase at nearby Sledmere House.

The property has a reception hall, formal drawing room, dining room, study, breakfast room, bespoke, handcrafted kitchen, matching laundry and boot room plus a utility room. On the first floor, there are five bedrooms and five bathrooms, including a master bedroom suite.

Karen Johnston says: “We have absolutely loved living here and we have created a successful lifestyle business thanks to the two holiday lets. We are selling because we want to concentrate on The North Star, which we have run for 27 years, and to have a home where there is no business attached.”
