New look for old shed

When John Swales decided to try and build a new home on land that had been owned by his family for 100 years, his meeting with planner did not proceed as expected.

A new-build was out of the question but converting a storage shed on the site was not and thanks to permitted development rules, he didn’t even need planning permission.

The result is that the commercial building is now a spacious, contemporary home for him amnd his family.

Converted by John and his team at JW Swales building contractors, the building’s steel frame has been strengthened and the new walls insulated, while large areas of triple glazing make the most of views towards the Cleveland Hills.

The property, on the edge of the village of Swainby, near Northallerton, is now a six-bedroom house that comes with gardens, ample parking and a 1.5 acre paddock.

The house has an entrance hall, sitting room, a kitchen diner, a large utility room, playroom/snug, bedroom with ensuite and a cloakroom plus a garage with office space.

The first floor has five further bedrooms and two bathrooms.
