Interiors: The joys of spring

The interiors world is definitely looking forward to the bursting forth of plants from the rain soaked earth this season. Enhanced production methods and a strong hint of confidence means Spring collections are teeming with ebullient designs. Striking hues give the senses a boost and reflect the renewed economic optimism that seems to have arisen.

Over recent years we have enjoyed gentle florals in light shades, reminiscent of a comfy episode of Miss Marple. However, in 2014 fabric designers are concentrating on the exotic excitement of the botanical sketch.

Digital printing means designs can be created featuring a level of detail previously reserved for carefully commissioned books. A case in point is Voyage of Discovery from Sanderson, which seems to have been lifted directly from the journals of a Victorian botanical explorer.

Beautifully accurate floral designs feature delicate camellias or exotic amazon jungle blooms interspersed with Capuchin monkeys and hummingbirds (from £46 per m).

More razor sharp digital prints feature in Butterfly Garden from the O&L Verdanta collection. Striking monochrome roses are injected with a shot of adrenalin by the contrasting addition of brightly coloured butterflies (£55 per m). The range also features Japonese, a glorious stylised depiction of oriental blossom – a large print to accommodate, but one that hints at an exotic story (£46 per m).

When it comes to brave choices, it can be difficult to outdo Christian Lacroix. His “Maison” collection, for Designers Guild, evokes the delight of a hot day on the French Riviera with a joyous mix of bold, fresh and vivid styles. Of particular note are Batailles de Fleurs – a cocktail of jewel tones highlighted against a plain back background (£149 per m) and Jardin exo’chic – rich green palm fronts on a monochrome leaf background (£89 per m).

Harlequin also pick up on the French theme with the Jardin Bohème collection, featuring vivid colours on linen backgrounds with some terrific embroidery thrown in for good measure (from £42/m).

Embroidery also appears in the Sumatra collection from Prestigious Textiles. Once more jewel bright tones, blend with linen backgrounds (£59 per m). Their Soleil collection also features a little hint of South of France chic in its clear, stylised florals such as Lamorna (from £16.80 per m).

Glorious digital botanicals are the basis of the Woodville collection by Zoffany a heady mixture of elegant oversize designs that envelope you in their wonderful detail (Phoebe £68/m and Magnolia Bough £125/m).

Whatever it looks like outside the window this Spring, you can rest assured that with these designs your rooms will feel full of sunshine and joy.
