This time of year always gives us a nice opportunity to show our mothers just how truly loved they are.

While “Thank You” tea towels and mixing bowls are still likely to be winners (especially given the baking renaissance inspired by Mary Berry et al) it can be nice to present something truly personal to your mother. Perhaps even something she can enjoy without encountering more work about the home!

There is a great trend for personalised artworks and gifts: if you order today, and use express delivery, a number of companies will still be able to ensure your mother receives something individual for the big day. Modern production methods mean that items are now often far more sophisticated than a simple name and can include detailed phrases and/or images to create a truly individual and heartfelt gift.

One of the top picks for me in the personalisation category is the “Thanks Mum” Mother’s Day print from ArtyHarty. The Leeds-based retailer will combine your selection of nine personal “thank you” messages to make a beautiful art-piece with old type style lettering in one of several contemporary shades on an antique white background. The print comes with a mount and is about 10in square. You can frame this yourself or have the company frame it in a white satin coloured solid wood box (£26 unframed, £44 framed – www.artyharty.com).

An alternative custom-made choice would be the Two Tone Personalised Wooden Crate from Plantabox, which looks perfect in both contemporary and traditional interiors. Crafted in sustainable RSC pine, the exteriors come in Rustic Pine or Antique Silver, with your choice of a series of on-trend vibrant colours for the interior. They are brilliant as display cabinets or extra storage alike (£34.95 – www.plantabox.co.uk; 01392 829977).

Ceramics are always a nice choice whether practical or for display. They might be “dust harbourers”, but they bring pleasure every time they are caught sight of. Danish brand Rikki Tikki has recently launched a range of Just Retro ceramic accessories that includes lovely bowls, shallow dishes and vases. The designs are perfectly up to the minute, combining textured matt exteriors with colourfully contrasting interiors – simply sumptuous with a typical Scandinavian focus on style, beauty and function (from £8.50 – www.scandinavianshop.co.uk; 01436 673623).

Mugs are also a key staple of Mothering Sunday, but I think the Kinto Toi Toi Toi Cups could just mark your mother out as someone very special. They are crafted in delicate porcelain featuring a paper-cutting motif. Each motif has a special meaning such as “good fortune” or “happiness of heart” and the name “toi toi toi” was a phrase used to pray for someone’s good luck and success. So, not only are these cups good to drink from, but they are also good for the soul (from £12.95 –www.95percent.co.uk; 01993 867078).
