Late starter gets her skates on to compete for title at 50

JUST a year after she took up the sport, a 50-year-old woman is set to compete at this month’s national ice skating championships in Sheffield.

Wendy Olivant, from Worksop, will take part along with eight other skaters based at iceSheffield, in Attercliffe, at the 2011 British Adult Championships which will be held from Thursday, February 17 to Saturday, February 19.

She said: “I can’t believe that I’m gearing up to take part in my first skating competition. Learning to skate has been such a fantastic experience.

“Competing against other skaters at a professional level is very daunting but I’m looking forward to performing my routine in front of a crowd. Even if I don’t win I’ll be proud of myself for making it this far.”

Mandy Parker, general manager at iceSheffield, said: “It just goes to show that you can start skating at any age and become incredibly passionate about it.

“We are extremely proud of all our skaters taking part and wish them the best of luck in the competition.”

More than 100 skaters will compete in the championships, which are organised by the National Ice Skating Association. Tickets for the event cost £5 a day or £10 for a three-day pass.
