Monster veg makes its mark at flower show

There were some world beaters at this year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show and a real eye-watering moment.

Champion grower Peter Glazebrook, a retired building surveyor, from Newark, Nottinghamshire, who is no stranger to the record books, set a world record for the heaviest carrot with his mammoth vegetable weighing in at 20lb, while Tony Glover from Swadlincote, Derbyshire, had a world record for the heaviest onion grown, which tipped the scales at 18lb 11.5oz.

However, there was a last-minute hitch for Mr Glover after judges ruled he was too late with his entry at the Flower Show championship.

Nevertheless officials still weighed the onion and recorded the achievement.

Mr Glover said of his record: “It’s absolutely wonderful.

“I have been trying to do this for about 30 years.”

There were yet more records with Joe Atherton, from Mansfield, growing a 36-inch runner bean, which broke the British record.

Nick Smith, show director, said: “We have a fantastic
show this year, with a record number of both growers and entries.

“The giant vegetables are extremely popular with our visitors who never cease to be amazed by the sheer size of these monsters and the skill of our growers.

“We are particularly pleased to see not one, but two world records and a British record broken here at Harrogate.”

There are a number of nurseries taking part and the winner of Best in Show was Every Picture Tells A Story.

This year the show has launched a new feature offering designs for tricky front gardens. Top honours went to Groundwork, Leeds, for their street garden, Be Resourceful IS4, which showcases how to reuse materials to create a beautiful but less wasteful outdoor space.

The show, at the Great Yorkshire Showground, continues today and tomorrow.
