Plant of the week: Elaeagnus

Elaeagnus aren’t the most colourful of shrubs, but in winter they can come into their own, especially one like E x ebbingei ‘Gilt Edge’ with its dark leaves edged with creamy yellow.

The leaves always show better in sun, but as long as the soil is fertile and moist but not wet, they should still do well.

Prune in late spring – removing any all-green leaves – to keep the shrub shapely and within bounds.

Left to its own devices, ‘Gilt Edge’ could eventually stand 12ft tall and the same in width.
