AW20 fashion reboot as we look for style that comforts, uplifts and takes us anywhere we are allowed to go

Our priorities have changed so there has been a rethink of AW20 fashion trends on the high street for this autumn. Stephanie Smith picks out key seasonal looks from Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Whistles and more.

We are all about print midi dresses and sturdy boots for the autumn and this look from Whistles is exactly what we mean. The dress is £159 and the boots are £185.AW20

Has the coronavirus crisis changed fashion for the better? It’s too early to say for sure, but it has underlined and focused minds on what we already knew – that fast fashion and the desire for newness are killing the planet.

So the focus for autumn/winter fashion is on longevity and adaptability. The enforced slower pace of lockdown means that many of us now want to invest in relaxed quality clothing and footwear that will not date but will style up and down with ease, depending on where our day does (and does not) take us.

This is not the whole story, however, because a fair few of us have also rediscovered fashion’s ability to uplift, inspire and please the senses. We post on Instagram to prove it, even if we are all dressed up with almost nowhere to go.

AW20 REBOOT -
CHECKS AND BALANCES: The great thing about checks, from plaids to houndstooth, is that they look considered, even when the cut is relaxed. Feel free to mix, match and clash, and wear head to toe. At Burberry house-check tights, skirts, coats and scarves are worn altogether. Brown check gives a nerdy Seventies feel, thoughtful and fun at the same time, so undeniably charming.
This look has it all going on with several major trend boxes ticked, including brown checks, belted tailoring and statement collars.
Rejina Pyo jacket, £625, and print top, £265, at Fenwick in York.AW20 REBOOT -

Then there is the Back to Work state of mind. Even if we are not physically back in the office, we might, occasionally, still want to show we mean business – the new easy tailoring fits the bill perfectly.

With all this in mind, these are the key revised and rebooted autumn/winter 2020 trends to look out for on the high street and in online stores.

AW20 REBOOT
 - COOL CARDIGANS:
Lockdown has enabled us to rediscover our inner sensible student (think Saffy in Absolutely Fabulous), bringing librarian knits to wear with Seventies-style denims, team with a pleated midi skirt or slip over a floaty multi-purpose midi dress. From neat and short to long and slouchy, this season's cardigans are equally at ease worn with tracksuit bottoms, tees and trainers.
