Girl about town

HOBBS celebrates its 30th birthday at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. Stephanie Smith seeks out some of the brand’s classic sales bargains.

Since Hobbs burst onto the UK fashion scene three decades ago, it has specialised in offering classic clothes with a contemporary twist – never boring, always cool and classy, bringing a sophisticated take to current trends.

These are the sort of clothes that work hard but look effortless, taking you from weekend to work to special occasions with ease.

It’s the contemporary classic nature of Hobbs that makes it an excellent High Street destination for picking up key pieces at a fraction of their original prices.

Look for bold pops of colour and prints in the current spring/summer collection. There’s a hint of the Seventies in safari-inspired pieces such as easy-to-wear shirt dresses in khaki, and feminine silk blouses teamed with tan accessories.

Minimalism and block colour play out in colour palettes, from pewter grey and eggshell to vibrant clashing tangerine and raspberry colours, while whites and neutrals also play a big part.

NW3 is a label that shows off the brand’s funkier side, its signature the use of quirky prints, this season on silk dresses and blouses, to wear with dark indigo flared jeans, jumpsuits and clogs in an array of colours, for a strong Seventies’ vibe. In selected stores and online.

Meanwhile, the Limited Edition collection shows feminine and romantic touches with contemporary broderie anglaise shirt-dresses and silk jackets. Tailoring is updated with a modern mix of hard and soft, with lace on shift dresses and military details on silk wool suits. Slouchy shirt dresses in violet and clementine are colour block genius.

Next month, Hobbs previews its autumn/winter collection at the Great Yorkshire Show, which runs Tuesday, July 12, to Thursday, July 14. The brand will join other retailers and Yorkshire design students at the Skipton Building Society Fashion Pavilion.
