Gown and country

THERE’S nothing like a weekend in the country for relaxation and romance. Stephanie Smith suggests how to get the look.

Whatever the weather, an escape to the country is the perfect spring pick-me-up, especially for those in search of romance – new or rekindled.

Romance-seekers require romantic clothes, ones that chime harmoniously with a country house setting and its promises of long walks by day, followed by long candlelit dinners that form the prelude to a long and luxurious night.

Dress the part, especially if trying country pursuits like riding, shooting and fishing. For day, take clothes that travel well and don’t look any the worse for a bit of rain and mud. This is not a hiking break, so leave the waterproof trousers and cagoules behind and opt for cotton whites, creams and floral prints, and keep it all long and flowing where possible, especially if only on rambles around the grounds. There’s no law that says you can’t walk far in a wispy tiered skirt, while simple little gathered cotton printed dresses will take you almost anywhere.

Wellies look wonderfully romantic with both short and floaty dresses, as do sturdy leather, flat ankle boots.

Don’t go too smart for evening, or you’ll break the spell. Check the hotel’s dress code, but keep the romance theme going with chiffons, lace and more pretty prints, doubling up day-to-night dresses to save space in the case.

Take a fine-knit cardigan (or two) and a great coat, one that at least attempts to ward off rain. Finally, don’t forget the umbrella – and make sure it’s big enough for two.
