Mix and match

LAYER fine knits with printed cottons and boldly coloured jersey for a trans-season look, says Stephanie Smith.

It’s always best to be prepared for anything.

Even in August, the thunder clouds are never far away and there’s often a brisk breeze to deal with, especially on the tops or close to the coast. So perhaps it’s just as well that the stores are filling up with cosy autumnal pieces, reminding us that winter will be here before we know it.

Fashion-wise, this time of year is not without its confusions, not knowing whether to leave home bare-legged or in tights, in sandals or booted, with cardigan, or jacket, or throw caution to the wind and set forth sleeveless.

Yet it can be a creative period, too, granting the opportunity to put together looks you might not have thought of before, on the basis that needs must. We Brits, after all, are famed for our eccentric approach to clothing ourselves, not afraid to mix formal with casual, the party dress and the biker boots, for brave and eclectic looks that suit all ages and show the world that we don’t take our fashion, or ourselves, too seriously.

Layering is the way to go, so look out for lightweight crochet scarves, fine-knit jumpers in mustard, green, teal blue and all the greys and taupes, and tweed jackets, skirts and dresses, perfect for all manner of daywear, including the office, and for taking the overly dressy edge off a special occasion look. Cotton, wool, silk and chiffon all mingle and mix in. Wear leather ankle boots with no tights, or try platform sandals with wool tights or knee-high socks. Make it up as you go along. That’s the beauty of it all, and the fun.
