Secret of Cheryl’s hair-raising look

Glamorous LA hair is the style of the moment, as demonstrated by Cheryl Cole, above, on her recent LA jaunts.

The look is best created in-salon, but it is possible to achieve something similar at home. Here are a few tips for success, from Su Wright, director of Unique Salons in Cottingham and Hessle.

“All hairstyles that involve this amount of volume need a good foundation, so start with a volumising shampoo and conditioner,” she says.

“Take away most of the moisture by roughly drying your hair. If your hair is too wet when you start to blow dry, it will dilute any product you put on it and it will take you so much longer to dry.

“Use a good quality volumising mousse or spray. Blast dry your hair at the roots mainly by turning your head upside down. This will mean you get the maximum amount of root lift to support the finished hair style. Using a paddle brush dry the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. On the top section use large rollers, set the hair in the desired direction and apply a heat styling spray – Sassoon Heat Shape is ideal.

Leave rollers for about 10 minutes. Remove carefully and brush back through with the paddle brush. To complete the look, backcomb the roots of the hair. If you want the full effect you should add some clip-in extensions at this point, which you would have pre-curled. Use a strong hold hairspray such as Shaper Fierce from Sebastian.”
