WINTER COAT TALE

it’s fair to say fashion is all mixed up this season, with utility parka jackets worn over party dresses and dramatic floor-skimming overcoats adding an extra layer to work wear. With that in mind, invest in one great coat this winter and you will find it perfect for making a statement for all occasions.

Perhaps it is a sign that some designers have become too comfortable or just completely confused, but they have blessed us with some strangely stylish dressing-gown style coats. Surprisingly, this snug shape is no longer banished to the bedroom, so wear the dramatic new length and wrap shape for effortless evening looks. Comfy cardigans have also evolved into floor-length coats. Drape one over a long, thick-knit scarf to accentuate a striking wintry theme.

The Parka jacket, synonymous with the military trend, pops up season after season (see also Six of the Best). This time around it has found itself at the forefront of fashion, having crept into a multitude of catwalk collections, where there were no restrictions. The party season has begun, so forget sequin shawls or delicate wraps and instead opt for a luxurious looking parka coat with an oversized fur-lined hood to add edgy style to gowns and party frocks. On the catwalk, white ski-style parkas with fur trims were worn over white sequin evening dresses. Big black bomber jacket shapes were draped over little black dresses. Faux fur, fleece and shearling, which seem to adorn everything from cosy coats and capes to killer heels and headgear, also transform traditional parka jackets.

To make an entrance at an evening event, wear a dramatic black wool overcoat of floor-skimming length over an elegant gown. This coat also works well for day wear by creating a grungy look. Wear it with a dark maxi skirt and a loose T-shirt or knit cardigan, belted at the waist. These long overcoats are also being worn over blazers, adding a layered and androgynous look to women’s work wear. There are some wonderfully flattering cuts on the high street, such as this cobalt blue coat (right, bottom) from Monsoon, which contrasts well over a jewel-toned party dress.

You do not have to go to great lengths to make a statement. The volume of a cape or poncho will also maximise style. This camel cape from Phase Eight is great for flashing just enough flesh when worn over party wear. Camel has become fashion’s favourite neutral shade this season. Layer up many of these subtle shades for a soft colour palette and add thrilling flashes of black for night time.

Above all, coats have to keep us warm, which is why cosy puffer jackets have exploded across the high street. Find them in primary hues to brighten up the whole of your winter wardrobe.
