Work that autumn look

At first, it all sounds ridiculously complicated.

I’m talking fashion trends for the coming autumn and winter, in case you were wondering, where we are being told that inspiration comes from various decades, including the Forties, the Fifties, the Sixties and the Seventies, and maybe a couple of others.

Best to not over-analyse. Just think retro, with the Forties dominant, with those lovely feminine lines that seem to encapsulate restraint and ease at the same time – quite a design feat.

Tweed is key, especially for jackets, cape and shift dresses. Checks and traditional wool patterning such as herringbone are major stories, and we see them both in the earthy tones of sage, grey and brown, and in bolder colours, especially red and black combinations.

Fashion continues its love affair with block colour into this autumn and winter, with shades that steer clear of the garish, but are still striking, in teal blue, mustard, burnt orange and tomato red.

Leopard-print continues too, also often in red, orange, green or a rich two-tone brown.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up, both in terms of colour and texture – a teal cord knee-length (or above-the-knee) A-line skirt with a grey or cream silk jersey T-shirt and mustard cape, or traditional tweed fitted jacket. Add a pair of long riding boots, or flat loafers, or hiker-style ankle boots or patent T-bar platforms – so many styles to choose from, and all of them fairly practical.

Now, as the season begins, take stock of your wardrobe and invest wisely in a few pieces for the season. Here are some suggestions for your autumn/winter mix-and-match look.
