Boggle Hole YHA, Mill Beck, Fylingthorpe, Whitby, YO22 4QU. 01947 880352, yha.org.uk: Boggle Hole is an unusual 85-bed site in a narrow wooded cove on the beach. The hostel has a number of quirky features such as a mermaid, seamonster and pirate – and no-one minds if you come back covered in sand. There is a cafe or self- catering facilities if you prefer. Due to the location it does have specific access difficulties, contact the hostel before booking.

Mankinholes YHA,Todmorden, OL14 6HR, 0845 3719751, yha.org.uk: A former 16th century manor house located in a rural hamlet with great views. Cosy lounge and well equipped kitchen. A great base for walkers and cyclists with a drying room and cycle store. It is family friendly and under 3s are welcome. Self catering but has a shop on site. Private rooms available.

YHA York, Water End, Clifton, York, YO30 6LP, 0845 3719051, yha.org.uk: Recently refurbished, York YHA is within walking distance of the city centre making it a handy base to explore this historic city and its surrounding countryside. The hostel has 203 beds across 45 rooms, 32 of which are en–suite. There is a 24 hour café bar, a kitchen, and IT suite with wi-fi.
