Lincoln City v Doncaster Rovers - Darren Moore and Michael Appleton enjoying friendly rivalry

That remains a fair way off, but it is undeniable that the good friends have delivered quiet revolutions at both the Keepmoat Stadium and Sincil Bank so far this campaign.

League One’s match of the day takes place today between two form sides who play football in the style in which most spectators believe to be the right way and are led by two impressive figures, whose presence in the third tier only enhances the division.

The pair’s friendship grew at West Brom – when they made tentative steps onto the coaching ladder while still playing.

Later, they linked up at Blackburn where Moore was first-team coach during Appleton’s time at Ewood Park, with both sharing the same footballing ethos.

Now they are in opposing camps at the top end of League One and whatever happens this afternoon, the respect will endure between the two.

Moore said: “It is funny how both teams come together in the style we like to play and how we see football and want to play the game – and think the same kind of things.

“That’s why we worked as manager and assistant manager together. Because as players when we both shared views on the game, it was always similar.”

Stressing he is not surprised by Lincoln’s status as leaders, the Rovers chief added: “Is it a surprise? No. Because me and Appy had a chat in the summer and he knew what I was thinking and I knew what he was thinking.

“I am pleased for him because of his ideas, thinking and methods with what he wants to do with his team and he has transformed that club with the style and brand of football. It bodes for a good game.”

Meanwhile, Rovers have completed a busy week of inward transfer activity by bringing in striker Omar Bogle from Charlton Athletic on an 18-month deal.
