Both Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall, in Ripon, and Roots, in York, received the accolade.

They were among the 17 new restaurants, including venues in London, Glasgow, Surrey, Devon and Cornwall, to be recognised with a one-star award.

Chef Shaun Rankin, who appeared on Masterchef in 2017, trained at The Mayfair Hotel in London.

His restaurant, at five-star luxury hotel Grantley Hall, offers a fine dining tasting menu inspired by his childhood memories and the local area.

How are restaurants awarded a Michelin star?

The prestigious award is given out from the same Michelin company that sells tires.

Its star rating system is highly coveted and relies entirely on its anonymous restaurant reviewers.

These reviewers are knowledgeable about food, but appear as if they are an ordinary customer while dining at a restaurant.

After they have visited a fine dining eatery, they write a thorough review of their experience focusing on food quality, techniques, the chef’s personality, value and consistency.

They then discuss with other reviewers on which restaurants will be given stars.

Michelin awards up to three stars, with three being the highest rating and only given to places offering "exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey".

Two stars stands for “excellent cooking that is worth a detour”.

This year, there were only three two star Michelin awards given to restaurants in the UK, and only two three stars.
