Neil Thompson defends Sheffield Wednesday winger Adam Reach

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY caretaker manager Neil Thompson has defended Adam Reach amid his disappointing run of recent form and is confident he will not lose any sleep over it and provide a positive reaction.

Reach found himself on the bench for last Saturday's home game with Birmingham and despite starting in Wednesday night's encounter at Brentford, he was substituted early on in the second half during the 3-0 defeat.

Thompson, whose side visit Luton Town on Saturday, commented: "He is like anyone. Everyone has ups and downs in how they play and It maybe wasn't Adam's night on Wednesday, but he's put a lot of miles in this year and a lot of games and you have got to appreciate that.

"It is one of those decisions you have to make and you have to make substitutions and try and change it.

"Like everyone, he came in this morning and he will just have to get on with it and do what he has to do."

On whether Reach's versatility is counting against him, he added: Maybe, but when you have got versatility, it gives you more options. If you are in one position, you have just one position to go for.

"Adam is an intelligent footballer and an intelligent young man and he gives you options in certain areas."

The Owls head south in need of a boost after three defeats on the spin, but face a Luton side who have confirmed expectations that they would be in the relegation mix all season - and despite an indifferent recent run, the Hatters are ten points ahead of Wednesday in the Championship table.

Thompson said: "We look at what they do but it's always tricky down there.

"They always play at a high tempo. The game against Millwall the other night was a scrap.

"We've had three defeats on the bounce which is not great. It's going to be a tough game. It's a tight pitch and they play aggressive. We need to match that.".
