130 jobs at risk in fight to make £30m savings

More than 130 jobs are at risk at a Yorkshire council which is having to make £30m savings by 2015.

East Riding Council says the majority of the posts – which represent 1.4 per cent of the workforce – are fixed-term contracts which might not be funded from April 2011.

According to the authority, none of the posts directly impact on East Riding schools or on frontline services such as refuse collection and street cleansing.

Council leader, Coun Stephen Parnaby said they'd made savings including by leaving posts unfilled and cutting senior management costs by 500,000 a year, but needed to "continue to find savings whilst ensuring that we protect services for the young, the elderly and vulnerable groups."

Employees at risk will be offered redeployment where possible and retraining.
