14 dead as building collapses in Bangladesh

At least 14 people were killed and several others were left trapped after a four-storey apartment building collapsed in Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka yesterday.

Rescuers recovered four bodies some time after 10 others had been found dead. Six more were taken to hospital One fire official said other people may have been trapped with further casualties expected from among nearby tin-roofed shanties buried under the debris. Troops later joined the rescue work.

The official said the four-storey building was on the site of what was once a canal. The owner had been adding another storey without

permission from city authorities, according to local sources.

Another official said no one knew how many people were in the building when it collapsed.
