A FRESH food company in East Yorkshire is to close at the end of the month with the loss of 140 jobs.

English Village Salads, based in Newport, near Howden, said the business had failed to recover from a decision last September by supermarket chain Asda to take a substantial part of its salad procurement in-house.

The company added in statement: “This, combined with the ongoing challenging trading environment, continued to have a significant effect on the volume of business managed through EVS throughout the remainder of 2011 and into 2012 and management has concluded that the business would not be viable going forward.”

The closure follows a 90-day consultation with all 178 staff, and it is anticipated the remainder will be relocated elsewhere within parent company Bakkavor Group.
