1am: Man jumps on to train but lands instead in coal wagon

POLICE have charged a man from Doncaster who they say jumped on to a late night train, but landed instead in a coal wagon.

Police were called to rescue the man from the back of a coal wagon on a train travelling from Killingholme to Immingham in northern Lincolnshire.

Shortly before 1am this morning, a member of the public heard someone shouting for help from the back of a train and called police.

The Humberside Police helicopter was launched to help locate the train which was travelling to Immingham to be loaded with coal.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service also attended to assist in the rescue of the man, who police said appeared to be in drink and was not able to get himself out of the wagon.

Paramedics checked over the 38-year-old Doncaster man who was then arrested by British Transport Police and taken into police custody at Scunthorpe Police Station. He has been charged with obstructing an engine, using railway and has been released on bail.

Inspector Glen Munson of Humberside Police said: “I would like to praise the quick thinking member of the public who heard the man’s cry for help and called police immediately. There is no doubt in my mind that the actions of this individual helped to save this mans life.

“Had the goods train got back to Immingham Docks , it is highly likely that the carriages would have been fully loaded with coal by crane for a return journey to the power station. Once in the carriage, it would have been impossible for the man to escape without help and he would almost certainly have been crushed to death.”
