2007 attendance high despite miserable weather

ATTENDANCE at this year's Great Yorkshire Show totalled 122,042 – 9.7 per cent lower than the 2006 record of 135,111 where the figure was probably inflated by a visit from the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

As work continued to clear the Harrogate showground after the three-day event, Show Director Bill Cowling said: "We have had another fantastic show and are delighted to have maintained the extremely high standards for which we are renowned.

"This was in spite of facing the most difficult weather in the show's history prior to the event. The highest June rainfall on record presented us with major challenges, particularly in preparing the car parks but our contingency plans stood us in good stead and worked well."

Mr Cowling said the Yorkshire Agricultural Society was delighted that so many visitors took the advice to use public transport, including trains and shuttle buses from three Harrogate railway stations.

"This is something we will certainly be building on in future years," added Mr Cowling.

Early figures appear to indicate that the use of trains and shuttle buses increased by 40 per cent on previous years.

Work has already begun on the society's next event, Countryside Live, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28. The 2008 Great Yorkshire Show, which will be the 150th, will be held from July 8 to 10.
