21-gun salute for Queen’s real birthday

York will mark the actual birthday of Her Majesty The Queen with a 21-gun Royal Salute today.

Prior to the salute, military music will fill the streets as the Heavy Cavalry and Cambrai Band marches from Duncombe Place, near York Minster, at 10.45 am to the Museum Gardens where, at the stroke of midday, artillery gunfire will sound the Royal Tribute.

The salute will be delivered by three 105mm light guns fired by officers and soldiers of 4th Regiment Royal Artillery in front of the gathered crowds.

The salute consists of 21 rounds being fired at 15-second intervals. York is one of 12 saluting stations in Britain, which includes London, Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff, but is the only one in the North of England.

Her Majesty, whose birthday is April 21, turned 87 yesterday.
