3,500 sign up for Jane
marathon

Organisers last night said they were ‘thrilled’ with the deluge of entries which have come from across the UK, France, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, the USA and even the Bahamas.

The new event is being organised by a new company under the Jane Tomlinson’s For All Events umbrella – the organisation set up as a memorial to the legacy of late Yorkshire fund-raiser Jane Tomlinson CBE who raised almost £2m for charity by tackling a series of endurance challenges, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Mike Tomlinson, who runs the organisation bearing his wife’s name, said: “It’s phenomenal – we’re really humbled by the level of interest in the new Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon.

“We knew it would be popular, but this is just sensational.

“It was always our hope this would become the biggest marathon in the North and judging by people’s appetite for it, we’re well on our way to achieving that.”

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon – which takes place in and around the ancient city of York on October 20 – was launched on Tuesday and it is expected to raise up to £500,000 for charity with up to 6,000 people taking part.
