80 jobs at risk as Army looks at HQ switch

UP to 80 York jobs are at risk from Army proposals to close 15 Brigade headquarters at York's Imphal Barracks and transfer the work to Catterick Garrison.

York MP Hugh Bayley raised the proposals in a series of Parliamentary Questions tabled to Defence Secretary Liam Fox on Monday.

The MP, who asked for the costs of bringing Bourlon Barracks at Catterick up to standard for use as an HQ if the move takes place, said he has been told the bill could come to 15m.

An Army spokeswoman said last night: "All Ministry of Defence assets are currently being reviewed and various proposals nationwide are being considered."

However, no final decision or costings on a move to Catterick had been made, the spokesman added.
