Abbey tales brought to book

Whitby Abbey staff member Sarah Rushall, above, takes a look at an anthology of stories from around the world about the historic ruin, which aims to raise funds to help preserve the site.

The book – Whitby Abbey: Pure Inspiration – is the culmination of a year-long competition to find a new stories about the North Yorkshire site..

The stories look at the abbey from different points in history, from its foundation by St Hilda, to its fall during the Reformation to its current role as a major tourist attraction.

More than 120 stories were entered from as far afield as the USA, Australia and Europe as well as the UK, before being filtered down to the 50 tales that appear in the book.

The overall winner was Sarah Ann Juckes, 21, from Leicestershire, for a story called Human Remains about an artist who spends years trying to create the perfect painting.
