Academy steps up pace for arts

Ballet teacher Jessica Thackwray, left, with Rebecca Eastwood and Phoebe Moule, right, at The Academy on Henshaw Lane in Yeadon, Leeds, where a former industrial unit has been transformed into an arts centre, with a recording studio, castings agency and costume and prop hire store.

It was opened by Carol Bicker, who has moved her own dance and drama school Centre Stage into the building. She said: "We really want The Academy to become a focal point for the arts in Yeadon and further afield.

"Lots of places are currently closing down so we hope it will be a big success. People can come and do dance, drama or singing. They can come to record music, hire a room to rehearse or come to source costumes – all under one roof."

The Academy is also on the lookout for people to join its own amateur theatre company.

Theatre company director Martin Holmes said: "We are looking for people from all walks of life who simply have an interest in the stage and the theatre."
