Actuary firm partner to get ‘dunked’ in charity challenge

A LEEDS man has joined a group set to take on a charity challenge to support serving and former Royal Marines.

Mark Rowlinson, 31, from Roundhay, has signed up as a participant in “escape the dunker” – the first event in the commando spirit series, annual fundraising events for Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF).

The organisers say the appeal activities offer participants an insight into what it means to be a Royal Marine commando today.

Those taking part will get the chance to test their mettle against some of the most formidable aspects of Royal Marines training, be accompanied by a former or serving Royal Marine to guide them through their experience, as well as helping to raise £1m for the RMCTF.

“Escape the dunker” will see a small group of challengers, including Mr Rowlinson, take on the infamous “dunker” – a tough Royal Marines training exercise that simulates a helicopter crash at sea.

He will be strapped into a mock fuselage that is thrust at speed into water, in the dark, until it is completely submerged.

The ordeal has been scheduled for September.

Mr Rowlinson, a partner at Leeds firm First Actuarial, has committed himself to raise a minimum of £10,000 from family, friends, colleagues and Leeds residents in order to take part.

He signed up for the challenge after talking to Marines at an event in May this year when he was struck by their bravery and passion.

He said: “I’m delighted to take part in raising money for such a wonderful charity – although I’m clearly a little daunted at the prospect of the dunker. I hope that the people of Leeds will support me in this unique challenge.”

The found of the commando spirit series events, Sally-Anne Hunter, added: “We are thrilled that Mark has agreed to take part in ‘escape the dunker’ and are grateful for his support.”

The RMCTF says it has the widest purposes of any service charity, working to support those wounded and injured, as well as those still serving, by funding activities, homecoming events and memorials.
