Affordable homes now easier to find online

People in the housing queue on the Yorkshire Coast will be among the first to sign up to a virtual estate agency being launched online to give house-hunters the chance to bid for affordable homes across North Yorkshire.

As reported by the Yorkshire Post, the 350,000 scheme is part of a major overhaul of the county's system of providing affordable housing to thousands of clients.

Aimed at anyone searching for an affordable house in seven districts – York, Richmondshire, Hambleton, Ryedale, Craven, Scarborough and Selby – applicants on Scarborough's Housing Register are now being asked to re-register for the new scheme, called North Yorkshire Homechoice.

The scheme, a response to the boom in the internet property market, will cover all North Yorkshire local authorities, apart from Harrogate, from June.

A letter will be sent to everyone on the housing register giving them the option of applying on-line or requesting a form during the first two weeks in February.

The best and quickest way of re-registering is to do it online at www.northyorkshirehomechoice.org.uk.

Alternatively, applicants can pick up a form from any of the Yorkshire Coast Homes offices in Scarborough, Whitby or Eastfield. Or they can got to the Scarborough Council Housing Options Team at the Customer First Centres in Scarborough and Whitby.

Applicants who re-register within the time limits will carry their original date of application across to the new joint housing register..

But those who delay are being warned they may lose their place on the waiting list. Their applications will only take effect from the date they have completed their new application.

Anyone needing help should contact Yorkshire Coast Homes and the Council's Customer First Teams.

Yorkshire Coast Homes staff will compile and run the new register, in tandem with the old system until the launch date in June.
