Agency ‘to cut flooding risk’ on Isle

THE risk of flooding in the Isle Of Axholme could be reduced by 25 per cent under plans being considered by the Environment Agency.

The agency has completed its initial public consultation over a proposed strategy to manage flooding from the rivers Thorne and Idle.

The strategy, which is now being developed before formal approval for the plans is sought next year, is for an area containing 28,000 properties, including the towns of Crowle and Thorne.

It says it has identified means of reducing the risk of flooding from a one in 75 chance to a one in 100 chance in any given year. But it said the plan will require the “help and support” of local communities.

Area flood risk manager Innes Thomson thanked residents who had responded to the consultation: “Working in close collaboration with others, the Environment Agency will continue to help provide the most appropriate and sustainable level of flood protection in relation to both flooding within the area and from the tidal rivers around the perimeter. Your views have been vital in developing the strategy so far and we are grateful.”
