Agreement over future of saltmarsh

WORK to remove part of a saltmarsh in Cleethorpes starts today following agreement between North East Lincolnshire Council and Natural England.

Outlying areas of saltmarsh north of Cleethorpes Leisure Centre will be removed while it will be left to continue to grow south of this area to protect the biological diversity of the Humber estuary.

Coun Peter Burgess, portfolio holder for environment and the green agenda at the council, said: "We are very pleased that we have been able to come to an agreement with Natural England.

"It means we are able to protect the area's tourism industry, which we are so reliant on, but also through this plan we can protect the important biological diversity of the Humber estuary."

The initial work will enable a full evaluation of the agreed management technique to be carried out and if it unsuccessful, removal by mechanical means will be considered.

A management plan is required by law due to the number of nature conservation designations that exist in the Humber. It serves as a framework that the council can follow and details how it can respond to the various pressures placed on the site.
