Airport scans for upstanding citizens

A British Airports Authority security officer demonstrates the new body scanners at Heathrow Airport.

It was revealed yesterday that air passengers who refuse to submit to a full body scan at Heathrow and Manchester airports will be barred from taking their flights. The two airports started operating the scanners yesterday and Birmingham will follow later this month.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis sought to allay privacy fears over the introduction of full body scans. He said the images from the scans are deleted "immediately" and staff are fully trained and supervised.
