Airspace to close amid ash fears

Airspace over Scotland and Northern Ireland will be closed from 7am today after ash levels in the atmosphere made it unsafe to fly, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said last night.

The announcement follows disruption yesterday as hundreds of flights were cancelled as the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud returned once again to UK airspace.

A CAA spokesman said last night: "Met Office forecasts show that levels of ash in the atmosphere over Scotland and Northern Ireland will exceed the concentrations that engine manufactures have agreed are safe for operations."

The CAA said there were concerns the ash cloud would continue to move south, potentially affecting airports in the north-west of England and North Wales today.
