Alderman honours for ex-councillors

FIVE former Hull city councillors have been earmarked for posts as honorary aldermen after clocking up nearly 80 years of service between them.

The five – including former council leader Ken Branson – retired at the last elections.

The honour allows them to sit in on council meetings and take part in civic processions on Remembrance Day, wearing green robes, as distinct from councillors in their blue robes.

They are invited to civic functions and can use the members' rooms in the Guildhall.

The former Lord Mayor and Myton councillor Ken Branson stood down in April after 24 years.

He is joined by former Labour cabinet member Councillor Gordon Wilson who retired from Bransholme West after serving 15 years, along with his ward and party colleague Max Bird.

Betty Hewitt served 12 years, the same length of time as Lib Dem councillor Pat Ellis, who until recently sat on the council's planning committee.

A final decision will be made by the civic committee on July 13.A report notes that the honours will not be a burden to the taxpayer and will promote good community leadership.
