Alert over roadworks thefts danger

Thieves who are targeting roadworks are putting lives at risk.

Manhole and gully covers, name plates and an electricity switching box have been stolen recently from roads across the south and west of Bradford.

Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police are warning that stealing such items from roadworks is endangering lives and that removing these objects has the potential to cause a major safety hazard.

Inspector Osman Khan, of Tong and Wyke Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Not only is this theft but the people who are stealing these covers are potentially endangering the lives of people in that area. I would ask anyone who has any information about the thefts to contact us on 01274 376625."

Anyone who sees such items being removed should call police immediately. If it is potentially dangerous they can report it to Bradford Council on 01274 431000 so they can make it safe.

Darren Badrock, principal engineer in the council's Major Maintenance, said: "Removing these objects creates a real danger to the public and anyone thinking of doing this should consider the consequences."
