All conkering

Rangers in Rotherham are preparing to celebrate the reopening of a popular park with a traditional autumn activity which they hope will become an annual fixture.

Jim Laughton and John Jackson are shown in training for Sunday’s conker championships at Ulley Country Park which was closed to the public for several months for repairs to the reservoir dam within it. The dam was severely damaged in the floods of 2007. Park staff said their Grand Conker Championship had been organised in an attempt to get families to visit and see some of the other improvements which have also taken place.

Members of the Friends of Ulley Country Park will be selling refreshments at the visitor centre, and a pictorial display, including photographs supplied by the engineers who carried out the dam repair, will be on show.

Conker championships are also planned at Thrybergh Country Park and Greasbrough Park, with competitions beginning at 1.30pm and ending at 3.30pm at all three venues.

Rangers said that in the interests of fairness, all conkers would be supplied by the parks. Places should be booked for the championships at all three parks by calling 01709 850353.
