All's fair for stories told in local writer's debut novel

A NOVEL set around Hull Fair will be published in the city on Friday.

Hull-born writer Russ Litten will be reading from his debut book Scream if you Want to go Faster at the Fruit arts venue in Humber Street.

Published by William Heinemann, it features 10 interconnected stories linked through the fair with the aftermath of the 2007 floods as a backdrop.

The entertainment will begin at 7.30pm with poetry readings from Eddie Smith, former singer with Hull band The Gargoyles, followed by the performance of a song dedicated to the book by the band's former guitarist Ted Key.

A short film by Dave Lee, The Last Job of the Night, based on a section of the book, will be shown before Mr Litten reads passages from the novel.

Mr Litten, 42, said: "I hope enough people buy it so I can write another. I want it to do really well but you've got to manage your expectations.

"I'm excited to have my debut novel published, I hope it puts Hull on the map. I hope people who wouldn't normally think about reading literary fiction will give it a go – it's not a dense, inaccessible sort of work."

He will give further readings and sign copies of the book at Waterstones in Hull next Thursday from 6pm. Admission to the launch event costs 3 and includes a glass of wine.
