Amber shows hat’s the way to raise cash for cancer research

A TODDLER who has just completed gruelling treatment for a brain tumour has helped launch an event which aims to raise cash for medical research.

Amber Whiston, who is just two and a half, was eight months old when she was diagnosed, and has since undergone more than 80 weeks of chemotherapy.

Now, she is supporting Wear a Hat Day, which takes place this Friday, and aims to encourage people to make donations to Brain Tumour Research.

Her mother Lara, 29, said: “We hope the people of Yorkshire will join us in supporting this vital cause. So many people are affected by brain tumours but the problem gets so little attention.

“Amber had her last dose of chemotherapy on Monday and she has been amazing, she has just blitzed her way through it and is so bright despite it all.

“But the doctors have been honest and told us that, although the tumour is not malignant, it is likely to grow back even if it lies dormant for a few years.”

Amber’s parents run the Hot Food Company, in Crookes, Sheffield, and hope to get their customers involved in fund-raising for the cause.

Sheffield-based charity group Sophie’s Wish, run by Pete Burchill whose own daughter Sophie suffered with a tumour is co-ordinating a Yorkshire wide effort for Wear a Hat Day.

He said: “Brain Tumour Research receives less than one per cent of national cancer spending yet this deadly disease kills more children and people under the age of 40 than any other cancer.”
