Anger as vandals wreck play area weeks before official opening

A COMMUNITY group has spoken of its shock and disappointment after a play area for teenagers was destroyed by vandals, just weeks before it was due to be officially opened.

Local councillors and the Friends of Bude Park have spent seven years campaigning for new facilities for young people to be created at the park in Bude Road, Hull.

But after 200,000 of investment from Hull Council, the Ground Works social enterprise company, and Playbuilder, those plans now lie in tatters after a weekend attack by vandals that has seen swings destroyed with bolt cutters, an assault course-style "zip wire" pulled down and other damage .

The park was due to be launched with a community fun day in June.

Samantha Waltham, treasurer of the Friends, said: "We are appalled and disappointed at the damage because it's just been refurbished and hasn't been open long.

"We were proud of what we had achieved."

The facility is in the Kings Park ward of Hull Council leader Carl Minns. He said: "Words can't express how angry I am at this mindless vandalism."

Anyone with information about the damage can call Humberside Police on 0845 6060 222.
