Anglers worry at car wash pollution

ANGLERS in Ilkley are complaining that a car wash is polluting their land and demanding that Bradford Council acts before any more harm is done.

This land on Coutances Way is designated by the council as a site of ecological/geological importance.

It contains a pond which is an old gravel pit, and immediately beyond it is the River Wharfe.

Steve Fairbourn, president of Ilkley Angling Club said the problems had been going on for several years after the council granted temporary planning permission for the car wash which he said at its busiest could see 15-20 cars an hour going through it.

He said: “There are major problems with it and we want a stop being put to it.” A Bradford Council spokeswoman said: “Investigations have been ongoing regarding this car wash and alleged contamination of the water course. Both Bradford Council and the Environment Agency are instigating legal proceedings to resolve the issues.”

Bradford councillor Anne Hawkesworth said she wanted to see action taken urgently.
