Animal classes: Historic win for Bella as Saddleback marks the comeback of pig classes

JOHN Wreakes entered the history books when his prized Saddleback took the Best Pig in Show title at Driffield Show, the first time pig classes have been entered for decades.

Organisers who decided to return pig classes at this year's event were rewarded with very healthy entries coming into the ring from across Yorkshire.

Mr Wreakes, who farms from Stainforth near Doncaster, took the top prize with his three-year- old Saddleback Victoria Lotty 300, or Bella as she is known to her owners.

It capped off an impressive week for Mr Wreakes who took the breed championship with the same animal at last week's Great Yorkshire Show.

He told the Yorkshire Post: "There's no secret to it. All you need is some hard work and a lot of luck. She has had a lot of breeding behind her - she's home bred, like all of our pigs. She's on her fourth litter already."

Mr Wreakes runs a small herd of pigs exclusively for showing at the county's agricultural shows.

The reserve prize went to K&K Matthews of Wilton, near Pickering.

Elsewhere, the dairy classes were won by Ravenfield Jerseys from Cowden near Hull.

Lindsay Wood showed the winning animal on behalf of the owners.

Ms Wood said: "It came third at the Great Yorkshire Show. She's a heifer in milk and seems to do well wherever she goes."

The supreme beef champion was taken by another of the summer's success stories, in the shape of W&M Seels, who farm from Brodsworth, near Doncaster.

They took the title in a closely contested final with their three-year-old British Blonde, Burgwallis Cadbury.

The animal has already taken titles at the Great Yorkshire Show and the Lincolnshire Show and is due for another run out next week at the Ryedale Show near Pickering.

Rebecca Seels, who exhibited the cow , said: "We have a fantastic breeding line and she has done really well.

"We are a family-run farm and when we get to the shows we have a fantastic team who help us out. They really make the difference."

Reserve was taken by KP Beginn with a Lincoln Red.
