Animals put down after fire at farm

The blaze took hold at Martins Nest Farm in Grime Lane at about 10pm.

Crews from across West and South Yorkshire attended the fire, which was put out at around 2.30am.

A vet had to put down a number of animals which were hurt in the blaze, including pigs and chickens.

Darren Bagley, watch commander of Huddersfield Fire Station, said: “Water was a big issue, there was only one small hydrant.

“All we could do was to protect one shed full of pigs prior to other pumps arriving and getting more water.

“It probably took three-quarters of an hour to get more water from another source. Five pigs in the main barn had to be destroyed.”

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
