Anonymity for marksmenwho shot barrister dead

Police marksmen who shot dead a barrister during an armed siege were granted anonymity yesterday to account for their actions.

An inquest into the death of Mark Saunders, 32, at his Chelsea home on May 6, 2008, is due to begin next Monday in London. Coroner Dr Paul Knapman granted 12 Metropolitan Police officers the right to hide their names at a short pre-hearing. In a written ruling, he said the inquest would not be “impaired” by the decision for secrecy.
