Another hit-and-run arrest as man is bailed over death of six-year-old Owen

A MAN arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a six-year-old boy was knocked down and killed has been released on bail.

Owen Wightman died when he was hit by a car while out playing with a seven-year-old friend close to his home in Wakefield on Saturday.

Police investigating the incident arrested a 21-year-old man from Huddersfield on Tuesday and last night confirmed he had been bailed pending further inquiries.

Owen was hit as he crossed the busy Fishpond Road at lunchtime on Saturday.

Police said a light blue or grey hatchback driven by a lone white man, probably in his 20s, failed to stop at the scene. But the car did stop about 100 yards further along the road after taking a left turn into Haveroid Lane where, police said, the driver was seen inspecting the front of the car for damage.

A team of detectives has been scrutinising CCTV footage from a passing bus which captured the vehicle involved.

In a separate incident yesterday a 41-year-old woman was arrested after a pedestrian in Cross Hills, Keighley, was struck by a car that failed to stop.

Officers were alerted at around 1pm yesterday that a 50-year-old local man had been hit by a black Peugeot 406 in Skipton Road.

A woman from Colne, Lancashire, is alleged to have failed to stop at the scene of the collision but was arrested about two hours later following police inquiries and remained in custody last night.

The injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Airedale General Hospital for treatment to a serious head injury.

He remained in hospital last night. His condition was described as “serious but stable.”
