Anti-exploitation team to protect Doncaster’s young

Children at risk of being sexually exploited are to be protected by a new first-of-its-kind team in Doncaster.

Specially-trained staff from the borough’s NHS, council and police services have been brought together to form the Children’s Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking Team.

Doncaster is believed to be the first local authority area to set up such a service, with its remit to safeguard vulnerable young people who could fall prey to dangerous adults.

The move follows recent high profile child sexual grooming cases across the country and national research which revealed an increase in referrals linked to exploitation.

The team - a social worker, two police officers, health worker, and education welfare officer - will work together to identify and protect local children at risk.

Tracey Newcomb, head of Doncaster Children’s Multi-Agency Referral and Assessment Service, said: “The result will be better joined up public services who can provide better protection to children found to be sexually exploited or whose circumstances make them at risk of falling into the trap.”
