Appeal for anonymity as sex case thrown out

A CONSERVATIVE colleague of a former council leader cleared of committing a sex act in his garden while sunbathing naked has called for anonymity for defendants “particularly in sex-related cases”.

Keith Brookes, 67, was acquitted of outraging public decency at Grimsby Crown Court after no evidence was offered against him and a formal not guilty verdict was entered.

Coun John Fenty, who represents the Humberston and New Waltham ward, said there was a “strong argument” for anonymity in cases like that of Coun Brookes and Coronation Street actor Michael Le Vell, who was cleared of child sex charges.

“Keith is a good man who has supported the community for 40 plus years and I believe he has got more to offer and I am pleased this matter is now done and dusted and he can get back to the task he is always craving which is looking out for the community and the betterment of the area.

“There is clearly a strong argument for anonymity for those who are accused and when all is said and done we only have to look at the Le Vell case to see how damaging to people’s lives it can be when they are accused of things upfront of evidence supporting the fact.

“It is really poor that we continue to put people through this, but I do understand the difficult side.”

Coun Brookes was suspended from the Conservative party in the wake of the allegations, although he remained a serving councillor.

Coun Fenty added: “I can see no reason why it is not lifted virtually overnight. It is not my decision but it is what I would hope would happen.”

Judge David Tremberg underlined the fact that no evidence had been found of any sex act. Coun Brookes, said in court to have been a naturist for more than 30 years, was given a three-year restraining order, banning him from his garden unless his private parts are covered. He has said he is “delighted” with the verdict.
