Applause for teenage soldier at Wakefield Cathedral funeral

SCORES of people applauded the funeral cortege of a teenage soldier killed in Afghanistan today as they braved miserable West Yorkshire weather to pay their respects.

Around 100 members of the public stood in the rain outside Wakefield Cathedral as Rifleman Luke Farmer's coffin was carried inside with full military honours.

Rfn Farmer, 19, from Pontefract, was on a foot patrol near Sangin, in Helmand Province, when he died on January 15.

The mourners who packed the cathedral were led by his father Mark and his mother Angela.

Rfn Farmer was from 3rd Battalion The Rifles.

Corporal Lee Brownson, 30, from Bishop Auckland, also died in the bomb blast.

Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, has said the pair were "protecting the local population from insurgents" when the attack happened.
