Apple of region’s eye celebrating season

Autumnal crafts and seasonal produce will give visitors one last chance to enjoy a stately home in Yorkshire before it wraps up for the winter.

The browning colours
and natural shapes of autumn will prove the inspiration
for visiting families as they
add to Harewood House’s sculptural paper forest, while
an array of orchard apples and craft fun breathes life into the estate north of Leeds until Sunday.

The estate’s leafy grounds have become home to its Autumn Glory attractions, which include its vibrant handcrafted indoor forest inside its courtyard education suite as part of the Big Draw scheme.

Children and their parents are being urged to come along
and depict their own leaves to hang on twine branches to encourage people to get drawing and make the most of the autumn.

Zoe White, learning co-ordinator at Harewood House, said: “It’s about embracing Harewood when it looks at its best.

“With the paper forest we have something unique to do and it’s a great experience – we have a lot of families working together with adults making leaves as well.”

The Big Draw, which runs until November 3, is a national campaign designed to get everyone drawing, whether people are adept or an amateur, enthused or inquisitive.

Harewood’s Autumn Glory events will also see children’s craft activities including potato and leaf printing, an interactive literature trail, storytelling in the bookshop and a carved pumpkin display run.

Seasonal food demonstrations in the estate’s old kitchen will
also see a broad range of apples from the Northern Fruit Group and Harewood’s orchards displayed.

Wildlife in the bird garden will also be in full flight. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the adventure playground, ruins of Harewood Castle and enjoy walks during the event.
