Applications invited for new council homes

Residents in York are being invited to bid for new homes following the completion of the first council houses in the city in over 20 years.

York Council is asking prospective tenants who have been searching for affordable properties in the city to snap up the new houses on the multi-million pound development in Clifton.

In September 2010 the authority successfully bid for funding from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency to build 19 new, eco-friendly council houses at a site off Lilbourne Drive.

Homes include nine two-bed and ten three-bed properties, which will all be owned and managed by the council. The development cost £2.5m, with £1.1m being funded by the Government.

Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing, York Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We’re committed to leading by example in Yorkshire and delivering much needed council housing to very high eco standards. We’re looking forward to the first tenants moving in this month.”

Customers registered on the North Yorkshire Home Choice housing list can bid for the homes. Initially they will be let to people who are local to York.
